Files apps for Windows and macOS #
Dataplicity Files connects your shared folders to Explorer or Finder. Edit files in your usual applications and let Files sync changes with your organisation.
Install and sign in #
- In the web console, open Storage → File Agents and choose Add computer.
- Select Windows or macOS, then download the installer for your computer: x64 or ARM64 for Windows; Apple silicon or Intel for Mac.
- On Windows, run the installer. On Mac, open the disk image and copy Dataplicity Files to Applications.
- Launch Dataplicity Files, enter your account email, and complete sign-in in the browser. Your usual SSO and MFA policies apply.
- Return to Files and select Open files. Confirm that the shared folders you expect are visible.
Files runs for the signed-in operating-system user. Other people using the same computer sign in separately with their own Dataplicity accounts. The app uses the same shared-folder permissions as the website.
Windows: work in Explorer #
Open Dataplicity Files in Explorer, or select Open files in the app. The managed folder is %USERPROFILE%\dataplicity.
Create and edit files inside your shared folders. Explorer status and the Files status window show sync progress or problems. Wait for syncing to finish before relying on a change being available on another device.
Files stays in the notification area when you close its window. Open it again from the tray icon or Start Menu. Quit Files stops the app and sync engine; reopening Files reconnects them.
Mac: work in Finder #
Choose Open in Finder (or Open files) to open the Dataplicity location in Finder. If prompted, enable Dataplicity in System Settings → Login Items & Extensions → File Providers. Finder manages file availability and downloads. An online-only file needs a connection before you can open its contents; download files you need before going offline. Use Finder's Download Now action to request a download.
Keep Files running while you work. Closing its window leaves it in the menu bar. Open its status window from the menu bar, or use Quit Files to stop it.
Offline work and conflicting edits #
You can edit files whose contents are already available locally while offline. Reconnect and keep Files running to send your changes and receive the latest shared content.
When two computers edit the same file independently, Files preserves divergent edits as a conflicted copy instead of silently discarding one. Compare both files, merge the changes you want, and remove the extra copy after confirming the result has synced.
The app also keeps changes needing recovery in private account storage. Open Recovery or Recovered changes in the status window to inspect them. Keep these copies until you have verified the shared result.
Sign out or change accounts #
Allow pending changes to finish syncing before signing out. Review recovery items first if the app reports a problem. Then open Account and sign out; sign in again with the account you want to use.
Signing out stops that account's sync. Copies you explicitly saved elsewhere remain on the computer. An administrator can also revoke the computer's Files access.
Resolve a sync problem #
- Offline: reconnect the computer and reopen Files if it was quit.
- Needs attention: open the status window, read the message, and use Retry when offered.
- Missing shared folder: ask your administrator to check your folder access tags.
- A change is missing on another device: check that the source has finished uploading, then check the destination's connection and status.
- Recovered changes or conflicted copies: compare the preserved files before replacing or deleting anything.
Preserve local work before reinstalling or removing the app. Contact support with the computer name, app version, status message and approximate time of the problem.
