Different evidence answers different questions. Start with the question, then use the smallest useful scope.
| Question | Use | First useful result |
|---|---|---|
| What did my application or service report? | Logs | A known event is visible with device and time context |
| What is true about this host now? | Device Diagnostics | Current system and hardware facts for one device |
| What changed around this device? | Device timeline | Connectivity and lifecycle events in order |
| Does this device still resemble its product class? | Device Class Pulse | Current makeup, coverage, readiness, and findings where ready |
| Is one device or part of the fleet offline? | Device monitors | A scoped connectivity condition and recovery signal |
| Is the service or customer journey working? | Create monitors and alerts | A check for the signal that represents the service |
Start narrow #
Begin with the affected device, class, customer, site, or cohort and the shortest useful time window. Broaden only after confirming the first query or selector works. An online agent proves connectivity to Dataplicity; it does not prove that the product application or customer journey is healthy.
When a signal needs action, use from signal to verified recovery. When the expected evidence is missing, use troubleshooting.
