Set up your first customer portal #

Finish with a test customer signing in to your branded portal and seeing one assigned device. Use a staging device and a customer account you control. You can complete this access exercise before building custom records or workflows.

Before you start #

You need Customer Portal access on your plan, an administrator who can configure portals and customers, and an online staging device in a product Device Class (the shared definition for one hardware model). Check Plans and availability if a required surface is missing.

Use a disposable customer boundary for this exercise. Allocating the device changes who can access it. If engineers need continuing access, an administrator must review Settings > Configuration > Allocated device access against your support policy before handover.

1. Configure the portal #

  1. Open Customer journey > Customer Portal in the engineering workspace.
  2. Choose the hosted Subdomain carefully: it is permanent and cannot be renamed later.
  3. Enter the Portal title and turn on Enable customer portal.
  4. Use Edit branding for your logo and colours, then configure the sign-in and support copy.
  5. Save and choose Open live preview.

Expected result: the preview shows your portal identity at its hosted https://your-vendor.dvcmgr.com address. Self-service custom hostnames are not part of this setup.

2. Create one test customer #

  1. Open Customer journey > Customers and choose Add customer.
  2. Enter a test Organization name and an Org admin email you control.
  3. Grant that customer access to the intended portal and complete the invitation.
  4. Sign in to the customer portal as that customer administrator.
  5. Under Networks, create one test location, such as Test warehouse.

A Network groups devices at a customer place; it need not represent a literal computer network. A customer account is separate from your engineering team.

3. Assign the device #

  1. In your engineering workspace, open Engineering > Devices.
  2. Confirm the staging device identity and choose Allocate to customer.
  3. Select your test customer.
  4. In the customer portal, open Devices as the customer Org owner or Admin.
  5. Assign the unit to Test warehouse.

An online unassigned unit is Ready. Network assignment makes it Enabled and available for application work at that place.

Check it worked #

Sign in through the branded portal in a separate browser profile as the test customer, rather than relying only on an engineering preview.

  • Devices shows the intended unit.
  • Networks shows the test location and assigned device.
  • The device's Status identifies the correct connected unit.
  • The customer cannot see another customer's devices or OEM engineering controls.

You are finished when the customer can find its assigned device within the correct customer boundary. Live readings and custom controls require a configured class UI and device integration; they are the next stage.
