Remote shell
Remote shell gives you command-line access to a Linux device from your browser. No SSH port forwarding, no VPN, and no inbound firewall changes.
Commands run with the Linux permissions of the agent's configured OS identity. Dataplicity access roles decide who may open a session, but do not add Linux privileges. Support Engineer cannot open a shell; that is a device-action grant. See Support team access, Shell privileges, and the device-side privilege boundary.
Production guides
| Guide | Description |
|---|---|
| Shell privileges | Understand and safely extend device permissions. |
| Copy and paste | Clipboard support in the terminal. |
| Process monitoring | See what is running during diagnosis. |
| Dataplicity Lens | Structured host inspection from the same shell session. |
| Run scripts in background | Long-running processes. |
| Control remote access | Plan customer-approved support access. |
Confirm the session works
To prove a new shell, run a read-only command such as htop. Optional first-session demos (device speech, ASCII Star Wars) are not production support workflows.
For web application access and resilient file retrieval, see Remote access.
